We speak for the dead to protect the living.
         --Toronto Police Service Motto
Policemen so cherish their status as keepers of the peace and protectors of
the public that they have occasionally been known to beat to death those
citizens or groups who question that status."

Horror

A young woman lies strewn amongst her pillows, a tortured look of screams of pain on her face, the brown stained pillows, and that scent of death that will follow you this day feels so distant from your heart. Another body, another case, and another file is what we see. The terms are numbers and evidence-- analyze and collect. Perhaps we resemble that which we fight.

Most have the luxury of ignoring the deviants, hopeless, and dark lurkers of this city. We who serve and protect are not so fortunate. While our streets are nothing like the streets of Washington, D.C or New Orleans, the carnage is too much for most to bear. The inevitable desensitization and numbness meet this cold truth, or the truth about humanity snaps the spirit.

Give pity to those who cannot ignore. Give support to those too numb to cry. Weep for those corrupted by what they stand fast against.

Apathy

We see so much violence and depravity in the world. We see our own bureaucracy running interference for criminals. We see the disrespect so many have for our occupation. When things go wrong the police are the scape goat, but never the heroes. When you must choose who to save because there aren't enough resources to save everybody. It wears thin upon our brethren.

In the end so many of us have a hard time continuing to care as we once did. Years of patrol, red tape, and regulation drive you against the wall. In the end more and more slip into apathy, coming to work because they are cops. After years it tends to wear upon you. Increasingly blank stares is the face of our force, as more and more come to believe there is little we can change.

Hope

For too many of us, the light is dimmed and smoky while others have turned their backs on it believing hope only to be an illusion. Yet there are those that find the knife blade path through the graven memories and disillusionment. What inner strength they draw upon, I do not know. They are the true voice of the dead in the city, and the few that give of themselves freely. In the end, they are the light of hope for the rest of us. Perhaps they can rescue the newest generation from the fall, before it is too late.
