Kindred of the East: Demon Shintai Characteristics

A kuei-jin's demon form is very personalized to their personality and nature of suffering in Yomi. The following is a list of characteristics. These should serve as a guideline for the actual mechanics. It is allowable, for example, utilize spikes to represent a covering of barbed wire. After selecting your characteristics, you should make sure that your descriptions for +shift are set to account for your change in form (see +help +shift).

Antennae

The character grows antennae which grant +1 to Perception rolls.

Claws

Claws inflict Strength + 1 (aggravated) damage.

Demon Armor

May be taken multiple times.

Each level grants an additional level of armor.

Demon Weapon

The weapon must be handheld (no missiles or firearms) and inflicts aggravated damage.

Enlarged Body Part

May be taken multiple times.

Part of the character's body swells. The bonus depends upon the specific part.

  • Head: +1 Perception
  • Torso: +1 to Soak Rolls
  • Legs: +1 Strength for Jumping

Extra Arms

The character has two extra arms which grant +2 dice to grapple checks.

Eyes of Horror

The character's eyes are such that they strike terror in those who meet their gaze. Anyone who does so must make a Willpower roll versus a difficulty of 6 or succumb to fear. Those who succumb to fear will flee if they are able to, or cower and faint if they are not.

Form of the Yamamatsu

Requires Demon Shintai 4

The character's body becomes rubbery. They gain an additional +2 to all soak rolls against non-aggravated damage. Additionally, they may stretch their limbs (but not their neck) up to a foot beyond their normal length and squeeze through spaces no smaller than their head.

Foulness

An aura of foulness which causes all opponents who are not in Demon Form, Possessed by Banes, or creatures of Yomi to suffer -1 dice to all actions while within 5 feet of the character.

Hive Body

The character may create a swarm of tiny creatures which exit their body through muscular sphincters or simply ripping free from their flesh. This swarm is equivalent to a single entity with 5 health levels capable of inflicting 1 lethal damage a round (the swarm automatically hits, there is no roll to attack).

Horns

The character grows horns which deal Strength + 1 (aggravated) damage.

Horror

May be taken twice.

This characteristic functions as Delirium. If taken a second time, the character may activate and deactivate the power at will.

The Host

Faces sprout all over the character's body. These faces inflict automatic bite damage of Strength + 1 (aggravated) to all grappled opponents.

Huge Size

The character grows to upwards of twelve feet in height and temporarily gains 3 Bruised Health Levels.

Mandibles

The character grows mandibles. These inflict Strength + 2 (aggravated) damage.

Maw

The character grows a maw of terrible teeth. These inflict Strength + 2 (aggravated) damage.

Multiple Heads

Requires Demon Shintai 5
May be taken multiple times.

The character grows additional heads. Each time this characteristic is taken, the character gains an additional head. Each additional head grants +1 to Perception rolls. Additionally, all heads must be decapitated to kill the character.

Poisoned Fangs

Requires Demon Shintai 6
Requires Mandibles or Maw

The character inflicts Strength + 3 (aggravated) damage with their bite. In addition, they may spend 1 point of yin chi to inject poison upon a successful attack. This poison deals Strength + 1 (lethal) damage to living creatures.

Spikes

The character's body is covered in spikes. The character may inflict aggravated damage on a body slam. Additionally, an opponent which botches a Martial Arts or Brawl roll against the character suffers their own Strength in aggravated damage.

Spurting Tendrils

Requires Demon Shintai 4

The character may disgorge gouts of acid or poison. This spray counts as a ranged attack with a range of 20 feet and a damage of 4 (lethal).

Suckers

Requires Demon Shintai 7
Requires Tentacles, Form of the Yamamatsu, or Foulness

The character grows tiny barbed suckers which grant +1 to climb and grapple checks. They inflict 1 point of aggravated damage each round to grappled individuals.

Suppurating Pustules

Requires Demon Shintai 5
Requires Foulness

The character is covered with oozing sores. These inflict 2 dice of aggravated damage to anyone who strikes the character in close range.

Tail

May be taken twice.

The tail is prehensile and so may wield objects and be used to perform certain Martial Arts manuevers. When taken a second time, the character's tail gains a stinger which inflicts Strength + 1 (aggravated) damage. The character may spend yin chi to inject poison upon a successful hit. The poison deals a number of aggravated damage equal to the amount of chi spent. This damage may be soaked with Stamina versus a difficulty of 8.

Tentacles

May be taken multiple times.

The character grows one tentacle per level taken in this characteristic. These tentacles replace the character's arms and are one foot long per level of mastery. The character gains +2 Strength for the purposes of crushing, grabbing, or squeezing. Additionally, they gain +2 dice to grapple checks. The character loses the ability to finely manipulate objects.

Third Eye

The character possesses a third eye which grants +1 to Perception rolls.

Wings

The character possesses wings and can fly clumsily at a speed of 25 miles per hour.

Wing Spines

Requires Demon Shintai 3
Requires Wings

The character can carry small objects with their wing spines. Additionally, they may utilize them to inflict Strength - 1 (aggravated) damage.
